How We Started
How We Started
This business has been in the works for a long time. As far back as I remember, there have always been two things I've believed - I could change the world if I put my mind to it, and that one of my numerous ideas might just be business worthy someday.
Since 2015, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world for work. I spent 5 summers in Tanzania with GIVE Volunteers working alongside residents in their own community. On the third night of every trip, we discussed with the volunteers their own expectations vs. realties thus far. The same ideas came up every time. Each group shared how they came into the trip feeling skeptical. Their friends and parents told them to have fun, but also to "be careful over there”. Media they'd encountered about Tanzania portrayed a dangerous and dirty place. By the third night, though, they were amazed at how comfortable they already felt. The people were smiling and friendly. They loved their kids and laughed with their friends. It really wasn't anything like what the volunteers had been conditioned to expect. They finally realized that even from opposite sides of the globe, there was so much more that connected than divided them.
Those nights, and that sense of connection, are why I started this business.
As 2020 progressed, and international travel came to a complete halt, The Good Mark Co. slowly came to fruition. Originally “Good Mark” came from an idea of selling bookmarks online, but it grew into reconnections with friends in Tanzania and booking my first ever flight to Turkey.
I want to market handmade products, crafted by dedicated, hardworking people, and share their story with the world. Most importantly, I want to connect the consumer to the individual who made their product and the place where they made it.
There is a name and face behind each of our products. When you purchase one of our colorful Basit Beach Towels or lively Kitenge Tote Bags I hope it connects you to the person who made it, and to the corner of the world they call home.
Where We're Going
The Good Mark Co. itself isn’t going to change the world, but maybe it can be a catalyst of change to an industry that hides us from the people behind our purchases. Our vision is to humanize online shopping by connecting people to where their products come from, and to the artisans who handcraft them with care.
This only works by providing our customers with high quality products and we recognize that. We are focused on growing into a true global marketplace that will showcase attractive handmade products created by artisans from around the world.
We want to provide you with an experience that doesn't quite exist yet. After purchasing your products, you have the chance to message the individuals who made them, say thank you, and share a picture. There is also a hand sewn, hand-signed label from the creators on the exterior of everything you buy. We hope that this label might remind you from time to time of the real people out there making the things we use on a daily basis.
Every purchase you make also positively impacts the communities where your products are created. A minimum 20 percent of your purchase + an additional 10 percent of all Good Mark profits go straight to the creators. They use the additional 10 percent to fund projects and charities in their communities.
We look forward to exploring the worlds’ corners, cultivating impactful relationships, and sharing new products with you whenever we can.
